Vermont Ski Weeks Set for Stowe and Killington

Vermont Ski Weeks Set for Stowe and Killington

Just as a blast of frigid Arctic air rushes through New England this week, the Green Mountain State is readying for 29th edition of the ever popular Winter Rendezvous, aka Stowe Gay Ski Week, which commences on January 23 and lasts through the 27th. As I like to remind readers whenever I talk about gay ski and snowboard events, these gatherings are great fun if you’re a fan of winter sports, but you needn’t be an ardent skier or boarder to enjoy them. There are all sorts of parties going on, plus Read more [...]

Grove Hotel, in Cherry Grove

The social hub of Cherry Grove and the largest accommodation on Fire Island, the Grove Hotel (aka the Cherry Grove Beach Hotel) has always been popular because of its central location, fabulous swimming pool (pictured here), and rollicking disco. It also has a pizza cafe, and it’s steps from the ferry dock in Cherry Grove and several other restaurants and gay bars. These have always been the hotel’s assets, but the actual size and decor of the guest rooms have never been much to write home about

Hanlans Point nude – and generally quite gay – beach, in the Toronto Islands

Toronto’s gay beach, at Hanlan’s Point in the scenic Toronto Islands, overlooks calm Lake Ontario and draws considerable crowds on warm days. This is one of the most popular – and famous – clothing-optional beaches in North America, and certainly one of the best gay beaches in Canada. Hanlan’s Point is without significant amenities; however, a paved walking path leads to Centre Island, with its numerous amusements, restaurants and snack bars, and additional ferry service back to the city.

Centre Island, the most touristy of the Toronto Islands

The busiest and most touristy of the Toronto Islands is Centre Island, to and from the largest of the archipelago’s ferries operates from spring through fall (there’s no winter service to Centre Island). Whereas adjacent Hanlan’s Point has a discernible gay scene, thanks to that island’s clothing-optional beach, Centre Island is decidedly mainstream, straight, and traditional, mostly the domain of families. You’ll plenty of restaurants and amusements here, however.

Top of the Bay restaurant, Cherry Grove

The most upscale of Cherry Grove’s several restaurants, Top of the Bay occupies an airy second-floor perch with a patio overlooking the dock at the village marina. You can dine or sip wine from a well-chosen list at the long bar, and enjoy such contemporary American fare as rosemary-roasted half chicken or cioppino at tables spaced closely in the narrow, softly lit room. This is definitely the most romantic restaurant in Cherry Grove (and it’s not cheap, either).
