Mad House Bar, Santa Cruz, California

Formerly the Seabright Bar & Lounge, the Mad House Bar opened in 2009 and has become the main GLBT hangout in Santa Cruz, as downtown’s Blue Lagoon has become increasingly hetero (although you’ll find that gays and straights mix quite happily at bars and lounges throughout Santa Cruz). Located in the funky Seabright neighborhood, on the east side of town not far from Capitola, the Mad House has a mid-size dance floor but is mostly a place to mingle and chill. Happy hours here are popular.

Blue Store, a sex-toy and erotica shop on 8th Avenue

Another of Chelsea’s rather garish sex-toy and porn stores, the Blue Store (206 8th Ave.) has garnered its share of bad press since it opened nearly a decade ago, first stirring the ire of neighbors who complained about its relentless blue-neon facade and the neighborhood’s seeming excess of such establishments. Then a couple of years ago cops shuttered the place for following a prostitution sting. The store has cleaned up its act some and is now a great source of gay erotica, lube, and such.

Amerika disco

The largest gay club in the city, Amerika (Gascon 1040) is on the edge of Palermo in the Almagro neighborhood. This place packs in huge (as in 2,000 revelers) crowds and is open Thursday through Sunday nights. There are multiple levels to dance and observe the scene, and Amerika draws a nice mix of sweaty club kids, stylish lesbians, heteros who love the music and vibe, and…well…pretty much everybody who’s anybody in gay Buenos Aires.

Slacks, Toronto, Ontario

The most popular – and elegant – lesbian hangout in the Church Street Village, Slack’s (formerly Slack Alice) is both a swish bar with exposed-brick walls, mod lighting, angular furnishings, and soft wood accents, plus a kick-ass sound system that’s made it a very live-music venue (for The Cliks, Hunter Valentine, and Melissa Ferrick, among others) as well as a terrific restaurant. For dining, in fact, it’s easily one of the best in the neighborhood.

Original Starbacks location, across from Pikes Place Market

The original branch of Starbucks Coffee opened in Seattle at Pike Place Market in 1971 and has been in this space at 1912 Pike Place since 1976. The facade of the store retains its endearingly crude lettering and appearance, per the historic codes of the neighborhood. The coffeehouse is along a strip of retail shops across from the many food stalls, fish markets, restaurants, and shops inside Pike Place Market.
