Then a couple of years ago cops shuttered the place for following a prostitution sting. The store has cleaned up its act some and is now a great source of gay erotica, lube, and such.

There are multiple levels to dance and observe the scene, and Amerika draws a nice mix of sweaty club kids, stylish lesbians, heteros who love the music and vibe, and…well…pretty much everybody who’s anybody in gay Buenos Aires.

The most popular – and elegant – lesbian hangout in the Church Street Village, Slack’s (formerly Slack Alice) is both a swish bar with exposed-brick walls, mod lighting, angular furnishings, and soft wood accents, plus a kick-ass sound system that’s made it a very live-music venue (for The Cliks, Hunter Valentine, and Melissa Ferrick, among others) as well as a terrific restaurant. The original branch of Starbucks Coffee opened in Seattle at Pike Place Market in 1971 and has been in this space at 1912 Pike Place since 1976. The facade of the store retains its endearingly crude lettering and appearance, per the historic codes of the neighborhood. The coffeehouse is along a strip of retail shops across from the many food stalls, fish markets, restaurants, and shops inside Pike Place Market.
