Amerika disco

The largest gay club in the city, Amerika (Gascon 1040) is on the edge of Palermo in the Almagro neighborhood. This place packs in huge (as in 2,000 revelers) crowds and is open Thursday through Sunday nights. There are multiple levels to dance and observe the scene, and Amerika draws a nice mix of sweaty club kids, stylish lesbians, heteros who love the music and vibe, and…well…pretty much everybody who’s anybody in gay Buenos Aires.

Original Starbacks location, across from Pikes Place Market

The original branch of Starbucks Coffee opened in Seattle at Pike Place Market in 1971 and has been in this space at 1912 Pike Place since 1976. The facade of the store retains its endearingly crude lettering and appearance, per the historic codes of the neighborhood. The coffeehouse is along a strip of retail shops across from the many food stalls, fish markets, restaurants, and shops inside Pike Place Market.

Blue Store, a sex-toy and erotica shop on 8th Avenue

Another of Chelsea’s rather garish sex-toy and porn stores, the Blue Store (206 8th Ave.) has garnered its share of bad press since it opened nearly a decade ago, first stirring the ire of neighbors who complained about its relentless blue-neon facade and the neighborhood’s seeming excess of such establishments. Then a couple of years ago cops shuttered the place for following a prostitution sting. The store has cleaned up its act some and is now a great source of gay erotica, lube, and such.

Club Jacksonville bathhouse, in historic San Marco

A reliable gay bathhouse with a loyal following of regulars, Club Jacksonville is in the city’s historic San Marco neighborhood, across the St. John River from Riverside and downtown, where most of the city’s gay nightspots are located – it’s a short drive, though. This is your standard bathhouse, having served the community since 1974. It’s not especially fancy, but the management did give the place a thorough refurbishment in recent years, and they work hard to keep it clean and pleasant.

Liliha Bakery and 24-Hour Coffeeshop, Honolulu

Hawaiians revere their bakeries, and in an unassuming neighborhood in northwestern Honolulu, Liliha Bakery and Coffeeshop has been attracting a loyal contingent of devotees since it opened in 1950. The big draw here are the coco puffs (no, not the treacly cereal but rather ethereal chocolate-cream puff pastries, also available filled with green-tea cream), but you’ll also find astoundingly good turnovers, doughnuts, chantilly cakes, and more.

Flaming Saddles: The Latest Cog in Hells Kitchen’s Growing Gay Nightlife Machine

A couple of months ago I wrote about the opening of New York City’s exciting – and huge – XL Nightclub, Lounge, and Cabaret, part of a forthcoming GLBT hotel and entertainment complex set to open in the western reaches of the white-hot Hells Kitchen district in early 2012. The nightclub is already open, and in early October, the neighborhood saw the unveiling of yet another distinctive gay nightspot, Flaming Saddles Saloon….Read Full Post Read more [...]
