As a resident of Oregon, I’ve been watching efforts here to overturn the state’s same-sex marriage ban with great interest. If all goes as is hoped, Oregon voters will reverse the ban when the issue appears as a measure on the 2014 ballot. I hadn’t quite expected the tide to turn so quickly in so many other states, but just in the past two weeks, three more states pushed through bills legalizing gay marriage. They are Delaware, Rhode Island, and Minnesota – an interesting combination of the two Read more [...]

In New Orleans, the gay community has quite a few celebrations throughout the year, including all the hubbub around Mardi Gras celebration (Feb. 28-Mar. 4 in 2014), the wild and colorful New Orleans Gay Halloween in late October (Oct. 24-31, 2013), and perhaps the biggest gay celebration of the region, Southern Decadence, which caps off the end of summer (Aug. 28-Sept. 2, 2013). It’s only in the past few years, however, that the city began to hold an annual New Orleans Gay Pride Festival, taking Read more [...]

Civil union are now legal in Colorado – LGBT-supportive Gov. John Hickenlooper signed the act into law on March 21, just over 20 years after the state weathered an ignominious phase in gay rights history, when it passed Amendment 2, which banned laws protecting GLBT residents from discrimination (laws of this kind, at that time, stood in Aspen, Boulder, and Denver). Amendment 2 was overturned in 1996, when the U.S. Supreme Court found it unconstitutional – interestingly, Justice Anthony Kennedy, Read more [...]

Note: Closed in April 2013 Along with the Club San Diego in Hillcrest, Vulcan Steam & Spa (805 W. Cedar St.) – in Little Italy – is a gay bathhouse. Of the two, this one is generally considered the most popular, its location especially close to downtown hotels and also fairly close to military bases, making it a bit more popular with those crowds than Club San Diego. It’s also very much favored by bears, leather guys, and a relatively older crowd. Overall, it’s a little dated but basically well-maintained, Read more [...]
